ABOUT US

Bacchus Wind Orchestra

Based in Tonbridge and originally started in 1988 under the auspices of Kent Music, Bacchus became independent in 2006 and now rehearses most weeks during term time at Judd School in Tonbridge.

Our aims are to provide local players with the opportunity to explore the large and diverse range of serious music written or arranged for wind orchestra, and to give our audiences a chance to hear this music. We regularly perform concerts in Kent and Sussex, both in formal indoor settings and in bandstands, and we have also undertaken tours, both in the UK and in France.

As an independent orchestra, our aims extend to raising funds for local and national charities, and local community groups. Past concerts have supported Hospice in the Weald, WWF and The Bridge Trust. Several of our current members have been with the orchestra since it started. However, as our reputation has grown, so has our membership and we now boast approximately 40 players.

MUSIC DIRECTOR - BRYNLY CLARKe

Brynly has been Musical Director of Bacchus since 2004. He is also Musical Director of the Lydian Orchestra, and regularly guest conducts orchestras around the South-East. Originally from Somerset, he was principal bassoonist of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain for four years, performed the Mozart Concerto with them, and briefly played the bassoon professionally with the London Sinfonietta and BBC Concert Orchestra. He conducted his first concert in 1971. His conducting teachers have included George Hurst, Tim Reynish, Benjamin Zander, Alim Shakh, Eduardo Portal Martin and John Landor. In 2020 he attended a Masterclass in Olomouc with the Moravian Philharmonic Orchestra, and in September 2022 was selected to participate in international Masterclasses in both Manchester and London. He is looking forward to making his Canadian conducting debut in Spring 2024 with the West Coast Symphony Orchestra of Vancouver.
